Food, Food, Glorious Food.

Everything on sale was to delight the senses at the Promenade en Gastronomie in Daglan village yesterday. From truffles, gateau, saucisson, escargots, to vegetables, fruit, candies and of course cheese and wine to name just a few of the delicacies on offer.

I had to buy my Sunday treat of strawberries which are picked that morning by a local grower.
 

One simply cannot have enough garlic. I love the little dishes for garlic, oil and herbs.

Once again we were unable to use our front door for the chicken and paella seller. The aroma drove the cats wild. We had to keep them away from the balcony in case they pulled in one of the chickens!

Always a teat to watch, the truffle dog who needed a little encouragement in the form of cheese snacks to find the truffles. I think citing the truffle hunting area next to the sausage stall could have something to do with the dogs inattention to his task.

Le Château De Monbazillac Part Two.

Fist of all, Bravo Les Bleus. I do not usually watch football but I, like millions of others, just had to watch this match.

O.K back to Monbazillac.

There is a very interesting room in the Château called Mounet-Sully room. There is only a brief explanation of the person so I just had to find out more. Mounet-Sully (birth name Jean-Sully Mounet was born in 1841 in Bergerac) and he became a famous actor, painter, sculptor and writer. He was a member of the celebrated Comedie Francaise, as was his brother Paul.

His most famous role as an actor was that of Oedipus in L’Oedipe, a French version by Jules Lacroix. He was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1889.

A little bit of scandal, his brother Paul was famous not only for his acting but for his affair with Sarah Bernhardt. Who’s picture you can see on the table in the room.

In the tower room is a gorgeous collection of white porcelain from Limoges which also belonged to Mounet-Sully.

A Reconstruction of a lady’s bedroom in the 17th Century.

 

Next to the bedroom is a wonderful room filled with sketches of Ladies fashions from the Edwardian period. I particularly liked this sketch above, the costume looks so elegant and stylish.
 

We had a sneaky peek into this room which is being restored to its former glory.

Le Château De Monbazillac.

Part One

This Château and vineyard is one of our favourite places to visit. So it was a real pleasure to show our friend around while she was here on holiday a few weeks ago.

Listed as an historical monument it dates back to the 16th Century where it was built in the Renaissance style. Set in a woodland with magnificent vistas across the valley. 3500 hectares of vines produce in my view pure nectar, sweet and dessert white wines. Which of course can be sampled in the wine shop before… and perhaps after… your visit to Le Château De Monbazillac.

The architecture is a mix of traditional and defence style, towers, parapet walk, battlements, moat, cannon and the start of Renaissance art in the form of wide windows, mullion windows, fixed bridge, grand interior staircase and of course the layout of the rooms.
 

The Château and its vines have been the property of Monbazillac Cooperative Winery since 1960. Before that the château was handed down from mother to child (or nephew) and has been sold six times since the 16th Century.
 

Coat of Arms Tower is represented by the successive owners of the Château. From the family that initially bequeathed the land for the construction of the Château to the last lords of the viscountcy.
 

The Grand Salon. The Renaissance fireplace was decorated in 1929 with heraldic sculptures.
 

A Harry Potter moment! In other words the bottle room. 7,000 bottles of Monbazillac from the 2002 and 2004 vintages are presented on the walls giving the walls a gorgeous golden glow. The display case shows the changes of bottle shape over the years.
 

The Dutch brand display case contains vintages of Monbazillac wine. The map by Belleyme (who surveyed the region from 1761 to 1774).
The spelling of the name was how my ancestors spelled their surname, an ancestral relative perhaps?. The Belleyme’s originated from Northern France, and owned the area now known as Belléme. A future blog I think.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel.

We are feeling in the mood for Christmas after our visit to the Noel Fête at Vitrac last Saturday afternoon, which was organised by children and staff at the local school. The workmanship of the arts and crafts on display was outstanding. Plus you could buy home made cakes, puddings and biscuits. Enjoy a cup of coffee or warming soup. Or buy a bottle of beer or whiskey to take home. All accompanied by guitar playing by one of the teachers, a brilliant way to spend an hour and to support the local school.

I think that Paul and I need to drink more wine! Wine corks were used in the making of the log houses and a few of the candle displays, superb. I was spoilt for choose on what to buy for Christmas.

The hearts on display opened up for chocolates or other gifts. I was thinking of a bracelet but I can dream.
 

What we did buy was a garland made out of straw and decorated with dried flowers etc. to place on our front door. Plus almond and apple cakes, which were so delicious that I wish that we had bought a very delicious looking chocolate pudding. In truth I do not think that I could have burnt off the calories before Christmas, but it looked so good.
 
 

Event:- Sarlat : English Themed Noel Market from Wednesday 6th December to the 31st December. Forty Chalets selling arts and crafts, toys, paintings, warm woolen mittens, scarves, hats, ornaments etc. Plus a skating rink and Father Christmas.
The English Theme will also be a feature in the many shops of Sarlat along the main road and the Medieval Quarter.
 
 

Superb food with our fellow Daglanaise.

First of all a very big thank you to the Club de l’Amitié of Daglanaise for the organisation of the meal at Le Gabarrier Restaurant. It was truly one of the nicest meals that I have ever tasted in South West France where the standard is so high to begin with. In such friendly company, what more could you wish for.

Le Gabarrier Restaurant is to be found in Allas-les-Mines behind the Musee, with wonderful views overlooking the Dordogne river.

The meal began with a cocktail made with raspberry, cranberry’s and rum, it was delicious.  Then we were served the Chefs soup, a starter followed.
This is Paul’s starter, foie gras creme brulee with tomato and basil sorbet.

 

As a vegetarian I particularly loved the sorbet made with tomato and basil, fresh goats cheese on granary bread with a side salad. One of my favorites and a meal all by itself.

A choice of red, white or Rose wine was served with the main course.

Just look at the enjoyment on his face while eating the main course of lamb in honey glaze.

 

I am happy, sitting besides the Maire, glass in hand and eating a succulent piece of grilled salmon, with a beetroot mash and creamed carrots.

It is great to get together and catch up with all of the local news.

 

Paul and I were so full but we could not resist the dessert. Which was followed by coffee and chocolates.

We will diet for the rest of the week… I think and we will certainly go to Le Gabarrier again, the service, the food, wine etc. where all excellent.
