Daglan Market + part one

Gastronome (food market) and vide grenier (empty attic) part one

Every Sunday morning in Daglan we are wakened to the sounds of different vender’s organising their stalls for the market. However, today’s was no ordinary market it was a “gastronome” (local produced food, wine, soap, leather goods etc) with the added bonus of “Chippy” the truffle finder, demonstrating his excellent skills in the square opposite our home and a “vide grenier” (empty attic). We were in for a treat.

The first signs of preparation for the forthcoming event was the appearance of a small forest which had materialised in the village square during the early hours of Friday morning.

Usually the market is in a horseshoe around the fountain but today it was around the fountain down the main road and right outside our front door.

A café that sold hot dogs, pizza and coffee was placed at the front of our home. You can just see Paul in the entrance to our home taking a photograph of Adam taking a photo. On the right was a stall selling roasted chickens, paella and duck, not a particularly good aroma for vegetarians.

A very colourful pan of paella, in the other pan was the duck.

Fresh cheeses, vegetable, bread, and of course wines from the area. We filled our basket with melons, freshly picked vegetables, strawberries and wine for the evening meal. We saved half of the strawberries for the crepes in the morning, delicious.

Finally, at two in the afternoon came the pièce de résistance, meet “Chippy” the truffle finder. It was very funny due to the fact that the butchers stall was nearby selling a large variety of pungent saucison (dry cured sausages). So strong was the aroma that “Chippy” had to be regularly retrieved from the butchers stall to the little forest to complete his demonstration.

Glad to say that he did find all of the truffles and got treats of sausage for his reward.
